Don't Worry Darling (5/10 stars)
The Drama Precedes the Movie
Glamorous trailer, intriguing exposition, exhausting development, and disappointing ending. For compliment, the employment of vibration, moans, and exhalation as the general sound effect is brilliant, which successfully sets up a suspenseful atmosphere in the first act.
Everything up until the inciting incident - Margaret’s suicide - is decent, from which the movie begins to fatigue. Prolix dialogues, incoherent motives, and dramatic ironies flooded the second act while all of these contributed to a rather simple and predictable climax. Elaborate foreshadowings and dangling threads strangled the narrative pace, providing each character with no time for a dynamic transformation, as the film concludes in a could-not-get-any-more-cliche way.
Gemma Chan’s character revolted, why? Olivia Wilde’s character chooses to stay, why? Operators of the game unable to control the NPCs they created, why? I was actually quite excited to see the hospital scene, expecting the Victory Project to be a clone paradise like the Westworld - and much to my disappointment, it’s, again, virtual reality. Dios ex Machina is the last choice for a movie like this, for it abandons all logic and the established world by introducing a new one, in which the audience is not interested to keep up with.
Overall, the deeper message precedes the movie itself."<>""}
